I am worried that if I use augmentative communication with my child, he/she will not learn to speak. Is this right?
Not at all!! Research shows that in fact implementing the right augmentative communication system may help your child develop his/her speech.
What is the best system to augment communication in people with autism?
There is not a right or wrong system!! The appropriate system to augment students' communication depend on their level of development and on their individual characteristics. It is not possible to recommend a particular system without having assessed the individual.
Is there any way of assessing which is the best communication system for a person with autism?
Yes, the ComFor tool is the ideal tool to determine this
Can anyone use the Comfor tool?
Undertaking specific training to learn how to administer and interpret the ComFor is strongly recommended.
Where can I find a therapist in the UK that can use the ComFor?
I was the first Speech and Language Therapist in the UK to undertake the compulsory training to use the ComFor. I offer my services to parents and schools.
